Profile

John Hayes has enjoyed a highly varied life during which he has been a successful agricultural economist, diplomat, orchardist, businessman and now Member of Parliament.

He was elected at the 2005 general election as constituency MP for the Wairarapa electorate. A large rural seat, the Wairarapa electorate comprises the communities of Featherston, Greytown and Masterton and the southern Hawke’s Bay towns of Woodville, Pahiatua, and Dannevirke. A change to the northern boundary saw Waipawa and Waipukurau included from 2007. John has been very active in representing the interests of the electorate to whom he is responsible, on issues like dog microchipping, the establishment of a Martinborough Cuisine school, and leading the charge to save Makoura College in Masterton from being unnecessarily closed.

At the 2008 General Election John increased his majority from 2,752 or 42.71% of the electoral votes to 6,758, receiving just over 50% of all the electoral votes cast.

John is the Chair of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee.

After a period working as an agricultural economist John joined the New Zealand Foreign Service. He represented New Zealand in Singapore, India, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia (as Charge d'Affaires); Papua New Guinea (as High Commissioner); Iran and Pakistan (as Ambassador).

He has worked on many of the important issues which have confronted New Zealand. He has been an advisor to Prime Ministers and senior Ministers and has long experience of the political process having been Principal Private Secretary to Rt. Hon. Mike Moore when he was Minister of Overseas Trade.

John gained prominence contributing to the successful resolution of the Bougainville conflict, over a period of ten years. He was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of that work.

The government of Chile bestowed a Bernard O’Higgins award for John’s services to that country.

He was educated at Rongotai College, Wellington, and holds a BAgrSci degree from Lincoln College. He was active in student politics as President of the Lincoln College Students Association and the New Zealand University Students Association. He was inaugural chair of the Wellington’s Chartwell School Board under the “Tomorrow’s Schools” reforms.

John is a Trustee of the “We The Peoples Foundation” and the “Bridget Nicholls Trust”. His interests include yachting, fishing and family. He is married to Helen and they live in Greytown. Their two children are working as lawyers.

Improving Eketahuna's Water 03-10-2011
John Hayes MP | 03 October 2011

Improving Eketahuna's Water 03-10-2011 03 October 2011

Wairarapa MP John Hayes said he was delighted to have secured a subsidy of $381,088 to help upgrade Eketahuna’s water supply when he presented a letter to Mayor Roly Ellis and Council staff in Dannevirke on Saturday morning.

The drinking-water subsidy of $381,088 equates to 85 percent of the cost of the works that were considered eligible for the upgrade. “The scheme means our smaller communities can make changes to their water supply that might otherwise be beyond them financially. I’m very pleased that Eketahuna and Wairarapa families will be able to build a better system,” Hayes said.

Hayes had been greatly impressed by Mayor Roly Ellis and his Councilor Keith Fenemor who since coming to office last year had set about upgrading water supplies for Dannevirke, Woodville and Pahiatua. That had given him the impetus to work hard on his colleague, Tony Ryall, to ensure the subsidy would be available to Eketahuna.

Funding core services like drinking water and sewage was often difficult for small population centres which meant additional financial help was often critical to a project being implemented.

“I’d like to congratulate Roly and his team on their successful application. The funding means Eketahuna can improve the drinking water quality”.

“This is excellent news for the people of the Wairarapa and especially those living in Eketahuna,” Hayes said.

Let’s extend a helping hand from the Wairarapa to those affected by the Christchurch earthquake 23-02-2011 23 February 2011

Let’s extend a helping hand from the Wairarapa to those affected by the Christchurch earthquake.

“Thousands of people in the Christchurch area have been badly affected by the latest Christchurch earthquake, and need a break,” said John Hayes MP.

“How about we in the Wairarapa and Central Hawkes Bay extend a hand of friendship and open our homes, batches, farm cottages and motels to those affected by this huge natural disaster.  This would allow these shattered people a respite from the constant ground shaking”, said Hayes.

“If you would be prepared to help please phone my office using the toll free number 0800 2 HAYES (0800 2 42937) and let me know what it is that you are able to offer.”

“I will co-ordinate with the Ministry of Social Services to match families with what is available,” Hayes said.

Hayes said he felt sure the people of his electorate will support this action to help those whose lives have been shattered by this terrible event.

“None of us are immune to this sort of environmental disaster,” Hayes said
