Profile

Phil Heatley was born and raised in Whangarei and has been the elected National Party MP for the city since 1999. His immediate and extended family all live in the area.

Phil attended Kamo High School and went on to Massey University where he completed a Master's degree with Honours in Horticultural Engineering in 1990. His first job was as a teacher in Whangarei. In 1993 Phil and his wife Jenny, a registered nurse, worked and studied as volunteers with an international relief agency on a hospital ship. While on port visits the crew undertook medical, agricultural and construction work in developing countries.

After returning to New Zealand in 1995, Phil was employed as an agricultural engineer for a New Zealand Dairy Board subsidiary. At national level he worked on behalf of the dairy industry on improving the environmental performance of dairy farmers and meeting Resource Management Act (1991) requirements.

As an Opposition MP 1999-2008 Phil was National Party spokesman on energy, fishing, forestry and housing, and served on the Primary Production Select Committee. He was appointed Minister of Housing and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture in the National-led Government 2008-2011 and is Minister of Energy and Resources, and Minister of Housing in the present Government.

Phil and Jenny have three children. Outside family, his interests include carpentry, tennis, boating and fishing.
